Alf Quill was born in the Sydney suburb of Ultimo in 1910.
He started his career with Pyrmont in 1927 at the age of 17 with four games and four goals.
A prolific scorer, Quill’s 868 goals in senior games from 1927 to 1949 still stands as an Australian record.
He played with Pyrmonth for two years and a further two years with Annandale Leichhardt before switching to Wallsend here he spent most of the remainder of his playing career.
Quill’s most successful season was in 1937 with Wallsend when he scored 78 goals.
In 1949 aged 39, Quill took part in 13 games and scored 14 goals during his last season with Wallsend.
He made seven national appearances for eight goals and took up coaching after he retired.
He was in charge of Australia in the match against Yugoslavia’s Hadjuk Split in late 1949.
