In May 2022 commitment towards strengthening the professional landscape of Australian football took another step forward with the implementation of the Football Australia Club Licensing system for A-League Men, A-League Women, NPL Men and NPL Women Clubs. The A-League Women clubs completed a pilot implementation of the system in mid-2022, and NPL Women clubs are completing a pilot implementation in the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2022. A full implementation of the system will take place for A-League Women and NPL Women clubs in 2023, with the insights and data from the pilot implementation utilised to improve the system.
Club Licensing is a key strategic initiative, which serves as both a regulatory and developmental tool. The system establishes and continuously raises standards that clubs must meet in the areas of sporting, infrastructure, personnel and administration, legal and finance in order to be eligible to participate in the relevant domestic or regional competition. Through the submission of information and documentation, clubs demonstrate their fulfilment of these standards.
The collection of data via the Club Licensing system will also provide significant benchmarking opportunities for clubs to assess and compare their situation with clubs throughout Australia for their match and training facilities, youth team programs, administrative and coaching staff and more.
By reviewing, increasing and elevating the standards and requirements on a consistent basis, Football Australia is striving to promote increased professionalism off the pitch, as well as provide clear and measurable targets for clubs with professional aspirations.
