LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT – Legacy 23

2022 Key Programs & Initiatives

1. Our Game – Referee Initiative

A reward and recognition initiative that seeks to offer young female referees, aged 15-26 years, the opportunity to meet FIFA Match Officials and showcase the pathway that is available to female referees.

2. Our Game Network

Community is at the heart of football in Australia, and with the ambitious target of 50:50 gender equity, collaboration at all levels of the game is essential.

The Our Game Network has been developed to unite our football family, drive cultural change, share ideas, celebrate the game, learn, and continue to challenge barriers that exist in our sport.

3. High-Performance Coaching Project

While Australian women in sports have continued to achieve sustained success on the field, the representation of women in coaching has remained stagnant and disproportionately low over the past decades.

The first phase of the High-Performance Coaching Initiative saw a comprehensive study to better understand the coaching landscape, including a survey of over 150 women coaches at various levels. The outcome was the publication of the white paper, “LEADING OUR GAME: Six tactics to address exclusionary practice in the development of high-performance women coaches in football”. Its primary objective is to combat the ongoing underrepresentation of women coaches in football by providing a comprehensive roadmap for their advancement.

The white paper goes beyond identifying obstacles and instead offers concrete measures to increase the participation and representation of women coaches. It emphasises the need to overhaul the learning and development systems and environments that have excluded women and kept their numbers low. By prioritising contemporary coaching capabilities and promoting gender equality in football environments, the goal is to foster a more inclusive and diverse coaching workforce. By acknowledging the barriers that exist and offering actionable solutions, it lays the foundation for a future in which women are better represented and supported in high-performance coaching positions.
