Vale Dr. Siri Kannangara

It is with deep sadness that Football Australia acknowledge the passing of Dr. Siri Kannangara, a distinguished figure in sports medicine and a cherished member of the Football Australia family. 

Emigrating to Australia from Sri Lanka in 1977, Dr. Kannangara's contributions to sports medicine and his dedication to the health and performance of athletes have left an indelible mark on the sports community.

Dr. Kannangara began his illustrious career in Australia by joining the medical staff of the Australian National Youth teams just two years after his arrival. His expertise and commitment soon led him to serve as the Physician and Consultant for the Australian Olympic teams at the Barcelona, Atlanta, and Sydney Games. His influence extended across multiple sports, including football, cricket, netball, and hockey, where he provided invaluable medical support at World Cup events.

In football, Dr. Kannangara's impact was profound, spanning nearly all national teams from youth squads to the Socceroos. He accompanied teams on numerous local and international tours, ensuring the well-being of players and staff alike. He was a pioneer in his field, always striving for excellence and innovation in sports medicine.

His dedication to the sport was further recognised when he became the first Australian to serve as a FIFA Medical Committee Member from 1999 to 2006. Dr. Kannangara's contributions to the global football community were significant, as he played a crucial role in advancing medical practices within the sport.

Dr. Kannangara's outstanding contributions were celebrated with his induction into the Football Australia Hall of Fame in 2002. His legacy was further cemented in 2013 when he was honoured with a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his significant service to medicine, particularly in the fields of sports medicine and rheumatology.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Kannangara was known for his unwavering commitment to his patients and colleagues. He was a mentor and a leader, always willing to share his knowledge and experience with others. His passion for sports medicine was matched by his kindness and dedication to those around him.

Dr. Kannangara's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of sports medicine professionals and athletes. His dedication, expertise, and passion for sport have left an enduring impact, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
