Football Australia is deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of a true legend of Australian football, Steve Maxwell, Socceroo Cap #339.
A prolific forward and a revered figure in the football community, Maxwell's legacy will forever be etched in the annals of our sport's history.
Maxwell first represented Australia at the age of 21, making his debut against Czechoslovakia on 6 August 1986 for the senior men’s national team. Maxwell would go on to make a total of four senior international appearances over a six-year span.
Maxwell played with the likes of current senior men’s national team Head Coach Graham Arnold and fellow South Australian great John Kosmina in his debut.
Born in North Adelaide, South Australia, ‘Maxi’ is a member of Football South Australia’s Hall of Fame and Player Life Member, for his long-standing commitment to the game and well-respected member of the community as both a player and coach.
Maxwell represented Adelaide City FC (1983-1986 and 1988-1994) and Marconi Stallions FC (1987), accumulating 321 National Soccer League (NSL) and Cup games including 82 goals.

During his time with Adelaide City FC, Maxwell lifted the NSL trophy three times and won the NSL Cup twice with the club.
Maxwell’s ability to find the back of the net was evident, as top goal scorer for Adelaide City FC (NSL) on five separate occasions.
