William “Podge” Maunder was born in Newcastle in 1903.
A noted goal scorer, Maunder was a member of Australia’s first international team that toured New Zealand in 1922.
At the age of 18 he scored the first-ever goal for Australia in a football international.
Maunder’s exciting performances between 1921 and 1928 created a groundswell of enthusiasm for the sport, especially in northern NSW.
Maunder scored three goals in six appearances for Australia against New Zealand, Canada, China and England.
He scored more than 500 goals in Northern NSW competition, captained NSW and Australia, and was offered a professional contract by Scottish club St Mirren.
